The Speaker took the chair at 3 o'clock.

PETITIONS

Dr. Brown presented a petition from certain inhabitants of Assiniboine, which was read in full by the Clerk. It sets forth that one James Stewart was unlawfully arrested and imprisoned for a breach of a liquor law unknown till then, and prays for such action at the hands of the House as shall relieve Stewart, and protect settlers generally.
Mr. Morrison (Niagara) presented several petitions from Chicago and Milwaukee, praying a Charter for the Erie and Ontario Ship Canal.
Hon. Mr. Langevin brought down a Supplementary Return of the accounts relating to the Intercolonial Railway.
A Message was brought down from His Excellency, containing the report of the delegates appointed to negotiate for the acquisition of Rupert's Land, and the North-West Territory.
On motion of Mr. Currier, seconded by Sir John A. Macdonald, it was resolved that when the House adjourned to-day, it stand ajourned till half past seven to-morrow evening.
Sir John A. Macdonald said that from the high esteem in which the Mayor of the city, Mr. Friel, was held, many members were anxious to attend the funeral, which takes place to-morrow (Wednesday) afternoon.
Motion carried.

GOVERNMENT DAYS

On motion of Sir John A. Macdonald it was resolved that until otherwise ordered Government business and orders shall have precedence on Thursdays, and that on Government days after the business and orders were gone through, the other business and orders of the previous day shall be taken up, and that on Thursdays the division of time [...]
