Swan Alley (Coleman Street)

There were a number of alleys named Swan Alley in early modern London. This Swan Alley ran east off Coleman Street, just south of the Armourers’ Hall. Various legal proceedings suggest that the alley bordered gardens and led to the properties of relatively affluent citizens (see links below to records transcribed in BHO). Harben notes that by 1799 the alley was known as Great Swan Alley at the west end and Little Swan Alley at the east end (Harben 564; BHO).
