I started getting warnings in FF: Some cookies are misusing the recommended “sameSite“ attribute

I tried various methods, which mitigated some of the problem, but I continued to get admonished about my cookies.
It looks like people on older versions of PHP are getting the warning and resorting to a hack. We're on the verge of upgrading so I didn't want to have any of that.

It looks like an .htaccess one-liner is solving the issue for me:
Header always edit Set-Cookie (.*) "$1; SameSite=Strict; Secure"

So it turns out that regular army types don't have attestation records/papers. Presumably because they didn't 'enlist'.
This means that users will require special instructions for people like Lt. Colonel Thomas Fraser Homer-Dixon

I have a functional editor, and I'm ready to test it. For the time being I'll do my own testing to make sure the egregious errors are fixed.
Next task is to start integrating the new editor design from PS.

There are nearly 200 distinct strings representing some kind of award/citation/honour in the DB right now. I pruned the list of official awards (like the Military Cross) and am left with 146 honours of some sort that I'd like to deal with.
I'm thinking that we could move them to a researcher's note, or create an array field in the data.person table called 'honours'. Either way, I'd also like to create an info page that explains what each one is and why it was generally awarded - they all sound impressive, but some were just for participating and others were basically rich dudes giving chums a bauble. In any case, there are some interesting stories in there.

I've spent a fair bit of time trying to rationalize a compact structure for multiple enlistments and I've come to the conclusion that any compactness that I may achieve comes at a processing cost that isn't worth it.
So, I've created a new 'enlistments' table that will have a one-to-many relationship with the person table - that is, every person can be associated with many enlistments.
Nearly 12,000 records have multiple dates-of-birth - either from mistakes or multiple enlistments. Either way I'll need to set something up that makes it easy to sort that out (some simpler version of the geocoder app that displays the two+ DOBs and lets the editor decide which one is right, or if it's a multiple-enlistment issue.

I'll also need to sort out the edits schema to figure out the best way to store edits (reproduce structure or use something like json).

I now have a fully-operational system that uses ORCID to log a user in (so no passwords are stored in the DB) and restricts them to sections of the site that their role demands. For example, if a user logs in and the role they have is 'editor' they will not be able to see the 'publish' page or the contributor manager. There are some niceties to add (proper messages when ACL redirects user, etc.), but the functionality is all there.

I've also written a groovy user management system (groovy because it uses an editable table). Contributors can be added or edited, but for the time being, they cannot be deleted using this manager. Instead of deletion, the lowest level is 'de-activated'. They can still log in but all they will see is the regular information page about their CGWP account and any messages we provide.

When a contributor logs in and runs a search, they will now see a link in the quick-view that will open an editor page for that record.

Following up on this post, I now have the ORCID login/log out working reliably, but there's a caveat (below).

The javascript solution is to set mode to no-cors, accept json, and include credentials.

I found that removing any of those configs will cause it to fail. If you watch the console you won't actually see any json returned (although there IS some). The mode: no-cors setting makes this an opaque request so the lack of response is expected. I follow-up with a function (orcidSessionStatus) that checks the logged-in status.

There is a caveat: in testing this solution I was unable to make it work in a regular browser session - that is, a regular window using my configured browser. It *only* worked in an unused/fresh browser. Specifically, if I launched Chromium with a temporary profile the ORCID log out worked. If I used my regular browser it did not.

I spent a lot of time testing stuff like removing extensions, clearing cookies, changing settings, etc. Nothing worked. I then reset my browser and re-installed my extensions, and that did it.

Conclusion: something in my browser setup broke my ability to make ORCID force-logout work. I have no idea what it was.

I'm at the point where I need to start thinking about how the nightly update/refresh is going to work.

Each night the DB needs to update the data tables with any vetted rows from the edit schema and refresh the materialized views.
A good SO post  suggests a few things:
1) cron - */30 * * * * psql -d your_database -c "REFRESH MATERIALIZED VIEW CONCURRENTLY my_mv"
2) trigger
3) listen/notify
Of those, only cron is practical as we will do maintenance on a schedule, not based on events.
Downside to cron is that it doesn't know if there have been problems.
As this will be a 2-step process (update data schema / refresh materialized views) our choice with cron is:
1) Ignore failures. If the failure is on the updates any refresh might be wasted.
But, a refresh doesn't take long (90 seconds-ish) so wasting cycles isn't a big deal.
If the failure is on the refresh how do we know? Would we need to do an audit to find discrepancies?
2) Write some code that runs before the view refresh that determines if errors occured during update and takes action (e.g. email and bail)
I also found pg_cron, which might be more elegant. Downside is that it needs to be installed

Note: if cron/psql is the answer, these psql flags will be useful:
-d database name
-c command
-b echo errors to standard or error output
-f filename (i.e. an sql file that contains the commands)
-L log file name
-q quiet

I've spent a while working on a user-management strategy. Here's what I've come up with.

CGWP will not in any way manage or store passwords for accounts. We will retain only publically-accessible information and rely on ORCID to provide authentication. Users will require an ORCID account to become a contributor.

CGWP is a registered app at ORCID, and is allowed to use the API. Using ORCID examples I have a system that works like this:

1. users click a log-in link, which shuffles them off to ORCID to sign in.
2. Once signed in, ORCID returns them to a CGWP page that checks that they are a CGWP user and gets a responsibility parameter for their account. This is then used to allow access to, for e.g. the editor.

I am currently working on the last issue wherein ORCID's logout mechanism isn't working for me. I have a test here. Next is to finish off the editor.

While the massively-parallel approach appeared to be working on my desktop when run overnight, some processes did seem to have crashed near the beginning; on GN's machine the whole thing died within minutes. I've now rewritten it so that only four (configurable param) processes are run in parallel at the same time, to hopefully reduce the load on the machine. We're now testing that.

Since the existing process was taking a very long time (1652 minutes for 25,600 records), I've devised a revised approach which allows for parallelization of the process. Basically, the driver ant file runs the XSLT with a special parameter that causes the XSLT to write a new temporary ant file as a parallel driver; then the first ant file calls the temporary one, and several processes are kicked off simultaneously. We're both running this overnight to see how fast it goes. There's obviously a lot of tuning we could do in terms of the task division, so we'll definitely be coming back to this, but since the default process will take up to two weeks, cutting it down is essential.

With GN, examined our original code for importing the two datasets, and started a revamp/rewrite of it, managed by ant. Currently running a full similarity metric test against the latest CGWP version. Will take days. May be able to split and parallelize it.

I wrote a PHP scraper that retrieved GIS coordinates from the CWGC page for almost all CEF cemeteries we are interested in. Our list of cemeteries comes from the CVWM, and is itself an augmented version of the CWGC list. So I was expecting that quite a few wouldn't show up on the CWGC site. Either because they aren't in the CWGC database and don't have map coordinates, or the cemetery isn't in the CWGC database, we are left with 918 cemeteries that need to be manually located:

I have a viable 'search all' system working now. It relies on a separate table that consists of a record id (the person's ID) and another field that is a concatenation of many of the other fields. It will need to get regenerated every time the materialized view is rebuilt.

The resulting search is very fast on my VM. The only feature missing for this is the ability to add constraints to the result. So, if you search for 'electrician calgary' it will work very well, but if you add an explicit regimental number constraint to the search, it will fail. This isn't hard to overcome, but it will require a fair bit of fiddling with the main SQL constructor as the structure is quite different from the way other queries are built (sub-query that produces a sequence of IDs gets passed to the parent query for eval.).

I've moved development to a local VM with 24GB RAM - and it sings!
Starting to do some abstraction by creating separate schemas for app, data,edits etc.

The CVWM data overlaps to some degree with LAC and CGWP data, but there are likely many records in CWVM (some with corollaries in CGWP) that are not yet in the current database because either they don't have a match in CGWP, or their CGWP match doesn't have an LAC id. I've written and tested this morning a comparison tool which detects all these records and outputs details of them in such a way that the obviously-needed ones can be immediately identified and their data automatically output into the current db, while more problematic matches can be inspected by a human. It's running now, and is expected to take a couple more hours.

When I imported the data I seem to have run strings through an escape routine twice, producing results like Jack O''Connor (note the double single quote. Replacing them was a bit of a hassle, but the logic is pretty simple:

Lots of individual records are linked to letters, newspaper articles, etc. through the soldierlinks table.
For e.g. Dick Irvin <http://canadiangreatwarproject.com/searches/soldierDetail.asp?ID=70961> is linked to this letter <http://canadiangreatwarproject.com/transcripts/transcriptDisplay.asp?Type=L&Id=229>. The transcripts are found in the generaltext table.

The logic seems to be: when loading an individual's record, look in the soldierlinks table for the soldierID and retrieve the linkIDs associated with it. Go get that linkID from the transcriptions table, which contains components for the HTML output. When users click the link (in the linkAuthor field) they see the letter or w.h.y., from the generaltext table. The generaltext table entries have an indexVal field which conforms to the overall letter. This may be made up of n entries (as below) in the generaltext table.

The letter (above) is actually three entries (delimited by the horizontal rule in the HTML output). The first is entryType LTRP, which I take to be a preamble. The second bit is an entryType LTRM, which I will call the main letter. The last bit is an LTRS entryType (SIC, maybe?) which appears to be a correction of portions of the letter.

The soldierlinks table has several link types: LTR (letter), WD (war diary), and NWS (newspaper).

We have quite a few people that declared a date of birth that doesn't meet postgresql's notion of a date and I coped with this by creating a date_of_birth field that contains an array of valid dates, and another field that contains an array of strings (the 'bad' dates).

I noticed that quite a few of them could be fixed, so I edited 115 of the easiest ones to check. There are still ~575 records with malformed birthdates, but quite a few of those will be easy to fix as well.

A feature I'm working on is the ability to cross-reference events, with the idea that users may be interested in,say, what battles took place throughout the war on August 10.

I've created a table of battles that Canada took part in (not an exhaustive list of all WW1 battles) and the time frame for each. So now I can ask for a list of battles that were being fought by Canada on August 10:

Note the parenthetical marks and operators:
defining your range as <@ '[1916-10-01,1917-04-01)' will find records that include all dates between October 1, 1916 and March 31, 1917 - you use the next day as your upper limit, signifying that you DO NOT WANT TO INCLUDE April 1, 1917 in the query. The <@ means 'contained by'. In the case of an explicit date, like 1918-10-01, you'd use @> (contains).
The documentation is a bit terse and geeky, and it seems to ignore things like use-cases (e.g. above) for dateranges, but it's pretty good overall.

Pat has delivered a general aesthetic that we will begin building on over the next couple weeks. A sneak peek is available here.

Landing page: this will be a basic search. Users can choose to focus the search if they want, but the default will be a full-text search of the every field in the 'person' table. The background image will be randomly chosen when the page loads - Pat is working on collecting as many as he can find so the page remains visually interesting to repeat viewers.

The 'Lest we forget' in the top right of the landing page is a collapsible widget. We have a few others in mind, probably being placed in the bottom half of the landing page. Some of the things we're considering: an 'interesting people' widget (oldest/youngest person to enlist, most-decorated, strangest job, W.H.Y.); battles that where being waged on this date; people that were wounded or died on this date; weather on this date (drawn from diaries); location of a regiment on this date (embedded map).

Search results: will allow users to refine their search by adding or removing search constraints, with search results being displayed in a pretty straightforward, sortable table. On mobile devices, we'll collapse this horizontally-oriented table in to a scrollable, vertically-oriented table. Most data in the results table will be clickable. When clicked, a search for that string will be run. So, for example, you can go from searching for a person by name to searching for an occupation instead, just by clicking on an occupation in the results table.

Details: available information for an individual will be tile-based. This provides an easy, visual cue for users to find the information they're looking for quickly. The attestation papers will probably be arranged such that users can 'scroll' through the images before clicking the one they want to view in full-size (similar to the current LAC page). What I like about this arrangement is that we can add or remove tiles at will. If we decide that that 'Database Information' isn't required for general users, we can remove it. If we have images of a person, we can insert a rotating images tile, etc.

Mobile: Right now, the mobile design is not as mature as the desktop version, but it will be given full consideration in due time - we anticipate that we will be able to produce a pretty fully-featured mobile version that will display everything elegantly - even on a phone!

Our second attempt at a merge, with a threshold of 6, completed, and we ran the diagnostics to look at the results. There were many instances of the same CGWP record being matched with more than one LAC record; and many of those merges were patently unwanted. We reconsidered the threshold and set it to 6.5, but we've also added a second check: before doing a merge, the algorithm now checks to see if the CGWP record that's about to be merged has a better match with a different LAC record, and if so, it doesn't proceed. These two changes should eliminate the number of multiple-merge issues, at the cost of possibly failing to merge the occasional CGWP record, in a situation where its best match is trumped by another CGWP record, but its best match is still the best one for a given LAC record, and that match is in fact correct. We believe such cases will be very rare, and we'll detect them anyway at the diagnostics stage, when we check for unmerged CGWP records.

After Monday's overnight test run of the merge code, we've made a bunch of tweaks and we're now re-running that code so we can get a cleaner output. We're only doing stage 1 (processing each LAC record and merging a CGWP record if there's a candidate); I've written a second process to check for a) cases where the same CGWP record has been merged with more than one LAC record, and b) cases where CGWP records have not been merged with any LAC record; I'm testing that with a tweaked version of the old output, but eventually that will be run against the merged data we're currently producing to provide a possible list of actionable issues for a human to examine.

I'm working with GN on an XSLT process to merge the best-matched CGWP data with LAC records. It's a bit more complicated than we thought, because of the need to identify CGWP records that don't end up getting merged at all with an LAC record, but still need to be preserved, and the oddities around the cutoff value for a match. I've reprocessed the match files locally to remove non-best matches, and started a test run of my XSLT using screen, so I can attach to it remotely if I need to; it's done tens of thousands of records so far without error, although of course I can't see the actual results easily. I know I've got some annoying namespace issues, looking at the output, but let's see if it completes anyway.

The bug that hit us yesterday was confusing in that we assumed it was triggered by the first/best match with an LAC record, but it turns out that it was most likely triggered by a subsequent attempt to find other matches, which hit a rare LAC record that doesn't have a surname element. I've added some checks that protect against this, and we're now running the complete task overnight.

Began work on some code to detect and evaluate matches between records in the original CGWP data and the LAC records, using XSLT. The logic is working well: we have a score between 0 and 15 for any comparison between records, based on ids, names, birth dates, regimental numbers and so on, and we're able to collect and report the best matches for any pair of records. We can run through the CGWP data and report these matches in a processable form. We hit a Saxon bug that was puzzling (it worked in Oxygen but failed at the command line with Saxon; this error went away after upgrading Saxon to this month's release). However, when we attempt to process large numbers of records, we hit a bug with one specific record which appears rather mysterious; we'll come back and look at this in more detail tomorrow. It seems likely that processing the whole set will take three days, so we need to have a rock-solid process before we start, and we need to be able to restart in the middle after a problem happens.

To do an import from CLI:
1) through whatever means at your disposal (e.g. sudo su then su postgres), become the postgres user
2) as user postgres, run 'psql -v ON_ERROR_STOP=1 dbname' (which ensures that the import will stop on the first error)
3) at the dbname=# prompt do '\i /path/to/file-you-want-to-import.sql'

I've got the LAC CEF data massaged enough to get it in to a PG DB. The only outstanding bit is the funky date issue (7113 incomplete/bad) dates that need to be dealt with by human hands. I also have PG-ready data from the original data set. It needs massive normalization and cleaning, though.

Going over the LAC data dump from November 2014 I found several problems that I needed to resolve:

1) Dates are entered inconsistently, so I can't rely on using a date type when pushing to PG. Other than formatting issues there are numerous instances where all or part of a date is illegible or missing entirely. I've managed to fix most issues, but there remain 7113 records that have problematic dates.
2) Not everyone has a set of associated document scans/regimental number/given names.

I've fixed as much as I think is reasonable, and will leave the rest to RAs to sort out.

Through whatever mistake I may have made, my XML dump from MariaDB included an illegal character (ê), making the result impossible to run through Saxon. Fixing the character in oXygen seems to fix it, even though it gets saved as charset=us-ascii.

FYI: when MySQL dumps to XML it uses a special method for storing null values - <field name="initials" xsi:nil="true" />
So, you either need to address that in your XSLT or replace it before starting (sed/awk, etc.)
