1996 Acknowledgements

I am indebted to many people for their help in producing this book. My greatest debt is to all the former internees and their families in Japan, Australia and Taiwan who agreed to tell their stories, without which this book would not have been written. They are listed in the bibliography. I thank especially those who gave me continuous help throughout my research: Joe Murakami and Andy Takamura in Japan; Evelyn Suzuki and Bill Shibasaki in Australia. I am also greatly indebted to former camp personnel who took the time and effort to answer my questions. I thank James Sullivan for his keen interest and support.

I thank also those who gave me assistance with various information and government records: D.C. Sissons, former research fellow of the Research School of Pacific Studies, ANU; Mick Beckwith of Hay, NSW; Ross Stockdale of the Engineering and Water Supply Department of Berri, SA; the Japanese American Citizens League in San Francisco and the National Association of Japanese Canadians in Winnipeg.

For their valuable assistance in locating archival materials, I am grateful for the following research officers of the Commonwealth Archives: George Smith and Myra Seton of the Adelaide office, Tim Bryant of the Melbourne office, Judith Robertson of the Brisbane office and Robyn Simpson of the Sydney office. I also wish to thank the staff of the Australian War Memorial.

I should like to acknowledge the financial assistance given by the following institutions: the Department of History of the University of Adelaide, the Department of Asian Languages and Studies and the Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies of the University of Queensland.

My greatest support came from Bill Gammage who showed me how to look at history and guided me throughout the writing process. I also benefited greatly from the careful comments and criticism offered by Kay Saunders, Hank Nelson and Margaret Bevege. In the final stage, Barry Maher assisted me generously in preparing the manuscript into a ‘camera ready’ text and I appreciate the advice of Craig Munro and Paul Rendle of UQ Press in the publication stage.

A few abridged versions of chapters have appeared in journals. I am grateful to the editors and publishers of the following journals for allowing me to use these writings: “Japanese Internees at Loveday, 1941-46”, Journal of Historical Society of S.A., No. 15, 1987 and “Repatriating Japanese Internees”, Journal of the Australian War Memorial, No. 15, 1989.

Most of all, I am grateful to Terry, my husband, who has always set aside time for proofreading the manuscript and patiently supported my research. To my daughter, Yumi, I extend my “thank you” for the time we could not spend together.

A note on sources

When accounts of ex-internees were in Japanese of Chinese, they were translated by the author and are indicated with [J] or [C] in endnotes.
