General Information About Victoria
"To realize Victoria you must take all that the eye
admires in Bournemouth, Torquay, the Isle of Wight, the
Happy Valley at Hong Kong, the Doon, Sorrento and Camp's Bay
- add reminiscences of the Thousand Islands and arrange the
whole around the Bay of Naples with some Himalayas for
background."
-- Rudyard Kipling
Some Hints about Victoria and
the West Coast
* Dress is fairly casual almost everywhere - especially
at the closing dinner, which will be an ocean-front barbeque
and potlatch.
* Bring a warm sweater as evenings by the water are
almost always cool. Layers work well in Victoria summer
evenings.
* Victoria does not have a lot of air conditioners. There
are none in place at UVic (unless you are a piece of
computing equipment.). As Victoria is usually quite
temperate, this should not cause a problem - but you may
appreciate cool clothing during the day.
* Victoria is a "walking city" with lots of paths,
beaches, trails and sidewalks to discover. You are
encouraged to bring comfortable footwear for exploring.
* A lightweight windbreaker which can also serve as a
rain jacket is a good idea to include.
* If you would like to stay on in Victoria or travel
throughout the province (Vancouver, Whistler, Long Beach,
Tofino, etc.) or Alberta (Banff,Jasper, Calgary, etc.) and
need a travel agent, contact:
