Myths on Maps

This is quite a brain teaser! I want to go through all the Pandion events to be absolutely certain, but I think that I may be able to solve this problem by making the parentage of Pandion_2 uncertain, and editing their descriptions a bit. I'll update this post as I work on it. I think this reflects what Pausianas is actually saying "there was a Pausanias who was an eponymous hero, but I'm not sure whose son he was."

"The one who was the eponymous hero" is actually an important enough character trait to be unambiguously identified, and so it is worth messing a little bit with the existing Pandions in order to make sure this works.

Update: having looked at this more, I think that Apollodorus' Pandions and Pausanias' Pandions are hopelessly confused. I'm not sure how best to fix this, and am going to put in on the back burner for a while, since I don't think we've confronted exactly this problem before. I think the solution is to decide which aspect of each character is central, and number the characters that way. Then, when authors disagree about events, we'll just create separate bibles with each separate characters. This will create a lot of overlap, but I think it will capture everything most accurately.

In terms of deciding what constitutes an event, the question has been raised whether or not it is relevant if the narrative voice is passive or active. An example of the former can be found in Iliad 16.168:

"Fifty ships had noble Achilles brought to Troy, and in each there was a crew of fifty oarsmen. Over these he set five leaders whom he could trust, while he was himself commander over them all."

The issue in cases like this is whether Achilles is actively appointing his leaders, thus making it an event, or if it is simply Homer providing exposition. So far, all events involving some sort of explicit action, regardless of their relative passivity, have been recorded; however, an official guideline might be useful.

Moving forward, all new characters, places, and group IDs must be documented (events are exempt). They should appear in the same format as within the XML (i.e. abas_3 not simply Abas), and should include a brief description to avoid confusion or conflation. Please use this post for documenting any new additions as they become apparent.

Additions to Places:

sperchiusRiver: A river in central Greece, south of Lamia. It is personified earlier in the Iliad (bk. 16) as a god, but there wasn't a corresponding placename entry for it as necessitated by bk. 23.

acropolis: The Acropolis at Athens.

Additions to Characters:

echepolos: A son of Anchises who gives Agamemnon his mare, Aithe.

noemon_1: A soldier killed by Odysseus in bk. 5. Changed from 'noemon.'

noemon_2: A comrade of Antilochus, introduced in bk. 23.

enops_1: Father of Satnios and Thestor. Changed from 'enops.'

enops_2: Father of Clytomedes.

clytomedes: Loses a boxing match to Nestor.

ancaeus_1: A participant in the Calydonian Boar Hunt and an Argonaut. Changed from 'ancaeus.'

ancaeus_2: Loses a wrestling match to Nestor.

polydorus_4: An Argive and son of Hippomedon.

attalus: Attalus I, king of Pergamus.

antigonus_3: Antigonus I Monophthalmus, general under Philip II and Alexander the Great, and founder of the Antigonid dynasty.

seleucus: Seleucus I Nicator, general under Alexander the Great.

lysimachus: An officer who served Alexander the Great and one of his successors after his death.

amyntas: King of Macedon and father of Philip II.

aridaeus: Son of Philip II.

cleomenes: Cleomenes of Naucratis, appointed governor of Egypt by Alexander the Great.

perdiccas: One of the generals of Alexander the Great.

alexander_3: Son of Alexander the Great by his wife, Roxana.

roxana: Wife of Alexander the Great and mother of Alexander IV of Macedon.

Additions to Groups:

metionidae: Sons of Metion.

For Sophie (and any future new project members), here is an easy way to resolve conflicts that arise from trying to commit documents that have been edited by more than one person during a session:

1. Drag the relevant (edited) files from the mom directory to the desktop.

2. Delete the remaining contents of the mom directory, but not the directory folder itself.

3. Perform an svn update as usual.

4. Open Oxygen; under Tools, select "Compare Files."

5. Open the desktop version of your file on one side and the one from the directory on the other.

6. Differences will display as red tabs on the scrollbar; click on them to jump to the conflict.

7. Carry over your changes to the directory version using the directional arrows (pay attention to the hover text and watch to be certain the changes you made now appear in both files).

8. When the documents are free of conflicts, you can validate and save.

9. Perform an svn commit as usual.

10. Before you delete the mom files on the desktop, it's worth checking that your changes went through. Then you can log out/shut down.
