We are told that this little Island is a wealthy one, that our people are energetic and industrious, and will have nothing to do with Canada, and that we will work out and secure our own independence, without outside assistance. I, as a man who believed in Confederation, am prepared to see it tried to the utmost, and if we are wealthy and energetic, we shall have to put forth our energies to increase the wealth of the country, and to carry out public improvements. And have we not as much right to carry out their wishes in respect to the railway question, as he had to carry out the wishes of his constituents in reference to Confederation?
