Spent some time collecting refs and doing background reading for the Hot Potatoes book chapter. I'm currently focusing on part one, the early origins, and looking at how the technological limitations of our situation (and that of most of our end-users) dictated a particular approach to exercise design (no testing, lots of feedback), which actually fits well with our own attitudes to online learning (too much teaching, not enough testing), and also aligns with research into the effectiveness of online materials (we hope!).
