HMS Topaze, 1858-1884
HMS Topaze was a 72 m long British steam frigate.1 According to various despatches, the Topaze was a gunboat, but served also as a survey vessel. In Hammond, Edmund to Merivale, Herman 14 October 1859, CO 305:12, no. 10175, 348, from October 1859, the Topaze was ordered to the Pacific Station at Valparaiso, along with the Clio.
In this despatch, the Topaze was ordered to join British naval forces on the North West Coast of America. HMS Topaze appears to have remained in service at Esquimalt Harbour in several capacities, until at least November 1866.
