PWFC discussions/decisions 2026-11-04
: Martin Holmes
Minutes: 110
Met with AB and NA to discuss some questions arising out of the variety and variability of the source documents and how that impacts encoding and rendering of translations. Decisions:
- We will be very flexible about the granularity of translation
blocks. While short, simple documents may just have a single
<div>for each language, other cases may require more granular blocks, down to thelist/itemlevel. - Where
<fw>,<pb>and other milestone elements appear within a translation block, they can just be replicated in each translation. - Some source documents which are in themselves originally bilingual will not need both source languages translated into the other; but translators and editors will need to add editorial notes to explain any variance between the translations. These notes will have to appear in both of the language versions so that whichever one you are reading, you’ll get a full picture of the variance; and they will also have to appear in the third-language translation, so that someone reading that will also understand any discrepancies between the two originals.
- In December, when trilingual versions are becoming stable, MH will revisit the proofing rendering and experiment with a columnar layout so that anyone on a desktop can read two or three languages side-by-side.
Also fixed a rendering bug in the local proofing output.
