While I was away SK and ECH consulted with E and S, and there is a new batch of fixes and tweaks to the PDF output. I started on those on Tuesday, and got through the first set.
On Wednesday, continued working on the long list of minor tweaks. Found a couple of small rendering issues that also need to be fixed.
On Thursday and Friday, continued working through; there are some big issues in the wings, though; one is whitespace, because I think the bugs mentioned above are the result of our having to eliminate the acres of whitespace in XML elements (especially where there are dozens of comments creating multiple text nodes between them), and in fact there’s no reliable way to handle that whitespace except with a series of very arcane special cases. Also, it appears that much of the intro content will need to be rendered in tables, and we currently have no handling at all for tables in the XSL code. Tables are potentially problematic in paged media if the scale of content in each column is variable and unpredictable.
