With my contract sadly ended again, here is a list of where to pick up again WHEN we get more funding:

1) Clean up tagging of contributors in bibl tags:

-add corresp=“psn:CS” to bibl tags for informant CS (in the entry for “raven” in qw.glot.xml, and the other 39 instances of CS in the database) [DONE SMK Oct 2012]

-add corresp=“psn:MG” to all bibl tags for informant MG [DONE SMK Oct 2012]

-go through MDH’s list of bibl tags containing parentheses (see previous blog post) and fix the corresp=“psn:” values. Examples like <bibl>MW(Y)</bibl> probably indicate that the speaker in parentheses first uttered the word, and MDK then checked it with the other speaker. So both speakers can be added to the <bibl>.

2) Review all persNames, placeNames, and orgNames tagged to date, and make sure they are consistent with our 15Dec11 decisions on markup, as outlined in the previous blog post and the Googledoc “Decisions on markup of names.odt”. [DONE SMK 6Nov2012]

3) Finish editing qw-glot.xml. [DONE SMK 7Nov2012]

4) Changes to rescued.xml per its TODO comment … if these are worth doing.

5) Then continue with tasks as listed on the blog, 29Nov10 and 28Sep10, and in my notebook on 30Sep10.

Notes from meeting with ECH, SMK and MDH:

• We will have an About item on the menu, which will have a basic intro to the project, and link to:
  • People (new page with lists of participants - Contributors, Elders, Editors)
  • Status
  • XML markup
  • Project blog
  This will reduce the existing menu to make room for more items.
• Questions for Editors will move to the bottom of the menu.
• "Marchand" will be added as a subsequent surname for informant W.
• "MG" will be added to the personography as "unknown, but probably " the existing G.
• "CS" will be added as "unknown".
• A list will be created of all <bibl> elements that contain parentheses, so that SMK can reformulate them in a consistent way. (That list is below.)
• We will create a new feature structure which enables us to categorize entries as being proper nouns (probably using the value ProperNoun, derived from the GOLD ontology "Proper Noun"); it would also help if the same ontology could provide a descriptor for nouns for creature names. Alternatively, we may go to Lexus/ViCOS to find appropriate descriptors.
• Where entries have a baseType of "name", and have multiple morphemes, we replace the baseType feature with the new feature, with a value of "ProperNoun".
• Where entries have a baseType of "name" but only one morpheme, we replace the baseType value of "name" with "root", and we also add the new "ProperNoun" feature.
• A list of entries with monomorphemic names will be generated, so SMK can check whether they're really monomorphemic, or have been erroneously collapsed into a single morpheme.
• Lists of placenames, people's names and organization names (actually tribal bands) will be generated based on the <persName>, <placeName> and <orgName> tags, and made available from an item "Names" on the menu. These will list the names etc. and provide links to the entries containing them.
• The three types of name tag will be applied wherever they show up, without making any claims to equivalency between those in English text and those in Moses text, except where such claims arise obviously out of the markup (e.g. the entire pron/seg is a name, and the entire def is a name).

I have already created a page listing people from the personography, but have not yet integrated that page into the site menu; I'll do that when working on the first item above.

ECH will provide relevant background information on the Contributing Speakers to be listed on the website, particularly birth dates, death dates, and how the speakers are related to each other, where available.

EDIT by MDH 2011-12-22: This task has been completed. I did add the list of Editors to the Contributors page because it's simpler than not adding it. We can always remove it if necessary. Task marked Completed.

1) MDH will add the list of speakers from the personography to a new page called Contributing Speakers. (No need to add the list of Editors at this time; they are all acknowledged on the home page.)

2) MDH will move the last three buttons from the side menu (Status, XML Markup, Project Blog) to a new page, to make the first menu shorter. The button linking to the new page will be called "About".

3) MDH, ECH, and SMK need to meet to make sure we're all on the same page re: markup of personal names and place names. Meeting tentatively set for 9:00am Thursday Dec. 15.

Spent some time with SMK addressing various questions about names and tagging issues, and interrogated the db a lot to find out how many instances of what types of thing we have. SMK will post tasks assigned to me as a result.

MDH has put the Editing Manual, Notes on Definitions and Gloss-Tagging, and Editorial Decisions files into the SVN repository, and SMK has taken these files off Googledocs. We will now be editing our local copies and committing changes to the SVN repository.

Implemented requests 1 through 3 in the Wishlist post, and also added parsing for informants so that their names are shown as tooltips when mousing over a <bibl> with which they're associated.

Re the other three wishlist items:

• Place Names to have their own page: Sounds reasonable, but we now have quite a few pages, so it might be a good idea to revisit our menu and see if we can subdivide it somehow.
• Personal Names don't appear in main entries, but only on their own page: I think the first part of this would be a mistake, for reasons I've explained in email.
• Mapping bibls to elicitation dates: Not practical right now, because we don't have the data.

• Created a personography file.
• Entered two lists of people: editors and informants. The Informants list contains one <personGrp> for the dual informant "Y"; otherwise it's all <person>.
• Generated a new schema to support the <particDesc> element and to add @corresp to <bibl>. In this I was frustrated by two things: firstly Roma has a bug (which I've reported on SF) whereby including the corpus module but then excluding the majority of its elements results in the exclusion of <particDesc> even when <particDesc> is not explicitly excluded, so I was forced to add the entirety of the corpus module. Secondly, oXygen has an annoying habit of deciding to validate files using tei_all instead of the explicitly-linked schema, which means you often don't realize your schema is screwed for ages.
• Ran some XSLT with today's regex of the day (constructed with an XPath concat()):

Next stage: go through SMK's markup documentation and integrate its key info into the formal documentation, and at the same time explain the use of the pseudo-protocol, to bring our docs up to date.

The following requests came up in ECH and SMK's discussion of the database display today. None of these requests are urgent, but we hope MDH can accomplish them in this or the next phase of the project.

1) Display of dictegs:

2) The symbol values of atomic entries (e.g. ROOT) should be displayed after the phonemic form of the word, before the sources. Currently the symbol value is displayed after the contents of the pron.

This looks fine in entries like:

/qʼʷácʼ/ ECH (ROOT)

But it gets messy if there is also a narrow transcription of the form ... and if it's long and the line starts to wrap:

/qʼʷaʔák/ A72; Y1.104; JM3.145.1 MG JM4.23.9 [qʼʷaʔaq] G74 (ROOT)

ECH would like it to look like:

/qʼʷaʔák/ (ROOT) A72; Y1.104; JM3.145.1 MG JM4.23.9

3) Would it be possible to show/hide all the source information in the web database display? Could the user click a button to make all the bibl information disappear or reappear?

4) Place Names

-are tagged with <placeName> within def:seg
-entries containing this tag appear as regular entries in the dictionary
-entries containing this tag could ALSO be displayed on a separate Place Names page.

5) Personal Names

-tagged with <persName> within def:seg
-if an entry contains a <persName> tag, the whole entry should be hidden from the main dictionary database display
-entries containing a <persName> tag should be listed on a separate Personal Names page

6) Mapping bibls to elicitation dates

Re: the personography, MDH had asked if MDK's notebooks are dated. The answer is yes, but the dates are only recorded on the notebooks themselves in the U of Washington archives. So the idea of mapping the numbers in the bibls to the dates will have to wait until one of us can go to Seattle and look at the notebooks.
