Places.xml updates - Nov. 16 2011

Posted by matthew on 16 Nov 2011 in Activity log
After a quick review of place names in the Iliad, I found that for example Homer consistently uses Ilion rather than Troy (96 such entries), and Pylos rather than Apollodorus' spelling, Pylus (11 entries). I am going through and adding aka's to such places and made the decision to have Pylos be the primary spelling and Pylus as the aka within the xml file. When doing something like this always remember to go to each file which contains the old spelling and find and replace with the newer spelling, otherwise the reader will not properly display the place (or character in the event of characters) Similarly, Troy is the primary name with Ilion and Ilium being aka descriptions within the xml. I am also in the process of revising character descriptions where there are multiple characters with the same name so the job of identifying which is which within apollodorus.xml and iliad.xml files will be much easier and less laborious. As I do this, I have added in aka's wherever it is appropriate. So far the best example is Chryseis, daughter of Chryses the priest of Apollo in the Trojan War. She also goes by Astynome, which was added as an aka.
