Map Of London

We are now following the name of a mythological character with the phrase "; mythological character" (note that we separate the character's name from the phrase with a semi-colon), which shows up on the Personography table.

Example: King Lud was thought by EM Londoners to be a historical person who founded London. For our purposes, Lud is more like a mythological character in the sense that he was a key figure in London's mythological past. The line between history and mythology is blurry in this period.

Note that we are not marking up references to Greek mythological figures. A reference to Persephone or Scylla and Charybdis would go unmarked.

Whenever a new page is added, the page is supposed to show up under the author’s contributions. I assume there’s a bit of encoding in the style sheet that tells the browser to get all the pages by the person tagged as "docAuthor." This feature of the site works fine … except for the Topics pages.

Example: Sarah Mead-Willis contributed “Bethlehem Hospital” (under "Sites") and “Gossip and Gossips” (under “Topics”). If you click on her name on the “Credits” page, only the first contribution shows up. Likewise, if you click on her byline at the bottom of either of her pages, only “Bethlehem Hospital” shows up.

I don’t know if the style sheet that generates the “Contributions” pages (e.g., http://mapoflondon.uvic.ca/contributions.php?id=MEAD1) needs to be fixed, or if something in the “Topics” page template needs to be fixed.

If you go to this page (for example), http://mapoflondon.uvic.ca/render_page.php?id=TYBU1, and click on the link that is supposed to take you to the Guidelines for Contributors (http://mapoflondon.uvic.ca/guidelines_contributors.php) you go instead to a message about the page not being found: (http://lettuce.tapor.uvic.ca/~london/not_found.htm). It also happens from the blank St. Paul's page. What Tyburn and St. Paul’s have in common is that they have a different underlying file that generates the “There is currently no description of ….” page. That file includes the bit about a student project being available. (I remember someone setting this up for me -- maybe Mike). So that’s the place to start looking for a problem.

Sooner or later, the time will come to make the layered experimental map into the main platform for the site. At the moment, MC and JJ know how to update the experimental map (Map 3). Updates are not being made to Map 2 (the one based on the new scans from the Guildhall and that went live in August 2006), with the consequence that errors remain there for a long time even when we know of them. In addition, the site index seems to be generated from Map 2. So, for example, the "Smow Hill" error on the map shows up in the index. In sum, the experimental map is more up-to-date and more complete.

The following questions need to be taken up with Stewart:

• What do MC and JJ need to do for Map 3 to be ready? What corrections do we need to make? And what additions do we want to make? Some of these have been noted in this blog already.
• What needs to be done on the HCMC end for Map 3 to be integrated as the main platform of the site? Is it simply a matter of "flicking a switch" or will more complex changes have to be made? E.g., what about map coordinates in the "More Info" box? What happens to them? Can they be replaced directly with a "ping" to the spot?
• Once Map 3 is our platform, how often can we make corrections, additions, updates? Every time we have a correction to make? Once a month? Once a year? What is involved on the HCMC end to incorporate new data that we've drawn on the map?

Melanie and I have noticed a glitch on the experimental map. The Information box (produced by a map query) generates links to articles that take one to the articles describing the features in the selected area. However, the Feature Search generates a list of links that do not take one to the articles describing the features in the selected area.

This glitch will need to be addressed before we can consider making the experimental map our main platform for the site.

Ask Stewart to change the way that unordered lists are displayed. Let's take the bullets away altogether but maintain indentation. See Chruso-thriambos page as an example.

For the diplomatic transcriptions in the library, we need to display the source on every page but there isn't always a piece of text to encode with the ref element (type="bibl"). Janelle's short-term solution for Chruso-thriambos is to add a bracketed note to each page with information about the documentary witness and to tag the author's name in that information.

It would be better, however, to include the bibliographical information about the documentary witness in the TEI header and tell the processor to display this information on every page. The TEI element to use is sourceDesc. Ask Stewart how to make this info display.

Christ Church, Newgate Street (XML:ID CHRI1) was also known as Greyfriars from his previous history. QUERY: can we put Greyfriars and Christ Church, Newgate on the index with the same id?

The paragraph element tells text to reproduce as a block with a line of white space between it and the previous and subsequent paragraphs. This is a problem in diplomatic transcriptions where there is no space between original paragraphs and/or where the first line of the paragraph is indented. At the moment, if we add a rend="indent" attribute, the whole paragraph moves over as a block by the amount specified.

The list of sources is not alphabetizing correctly authors whose names begin with a lower-case letter (e.g., van Buchell, Arend) or entries that have a title but no author (e.g., links to "Whitefriars" page on a website). Note that some of the latter appear at the beginning of the sources and some at the end, even though they are scattered alphabetically by title throughout the bibl.xml file.

We would like them to order as follows:

1. Alphabetically by author, regardless of case
2. If there is no author, alphabetically by title, regardless of case and ignoring punctuation (e.g., quotation marks)

Ask Stewart to create a new rule in the schema that will tell the processor to alphabetize as above.

Literary References and any pages that are not street/site articles are not showing up under "Contributions by this Author." For example, PM transcribed the literary references for 2IYKNMYKN but her work is not credited on her page.

In cases where we have already created a page for a site/street, the title at the top of the Literary References page appears thus: Literary References for Cheapside.

Made some changes to the Personography. We are now following the name of a fictional character with the phrase "; fictional character" (note that we separate the character's name from the phrase with a semi-colon), which shows up on the Personography table. In the .xml file that underlies the Personography, we indicate (commented out) in which plays/texts the character appears. At some point, it may be possible to do more with this information. Characters like Queen Elizabeth appear in many post-1603 texts. Clicking on her name will bring up a list of pages in which this character is mentioned, including all of the plays excerpted to date. This dynamically generated list may or may not be exhaustive of all the early modern texts in which the character appears.

In encoding the literary references, we are now tagging the speech prefixes and names of characters within speeches with the xml:id tag that points to the fictional character. The first play to be encoded in this way is 2 If You Know Not Me You Know Nobody.

• Can we make the cells on the Personography table wider? Now that we are including more information, some of the cells are wrapping unnecessarily. We have lots of white space to play with on this page.

• We have had a page for St. Mary-le-Bow Churchyard but not for St. Mary-Le-Bow Church (now ID STMA25). Check that refs previously are pointing to the correct page. Problem became apparent while JJ encoding lit refs from 2 IYKNMYKN
