Tranquille River flows southeast into the east end of Kamloops Lake.1
The story regarding the origin of its naming is controversial. Either the river was
named after a Shuswap chief who was particularly friendly with the fur traders, or
the chief named himself after the river.2
Upon the chief's death in 1841, his nephew murdered the HBC Chief Factor at Fort Kamloops
because he was led to believe there was some negative encounter between him and Chief
Tranquille.3
