John Shepherd had a storied career in which he occupied several positions of broad
power. He became chairman of the East India Company in
1844,
1850, and
1851. He was nominated to the Committee of the HBC on
27 November 1850, took the position of deputy governor of the HBC on
24 November 1852 and became governor on
26 November 1856. Shepherd died in
London on
12 January 1859.
