Mayer, George
George Mayer began service in the Colonial Office in 1810 as an extra clerk.1 In 1814 he was given a permanent position as Keeper of the Papers and Librarian. He obtained
the salary of a senior clerk a decade later.2
Mayer played a prominent role in the systematic organization and preservation of the
department's correspondence.3
