Colonial Despatches

HMS Inconstant was a fifth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy, designed by Captain Hayes and launched on June 19th, 1836.1

A transcribed 1849 enclosure in Pelly, John Henry to Grey, George 28 February 1851, CO 305:3, no. 1800, 362 notes that the Inconstant's captain at the time, John Shepherd, refused passage to disgruntled HBC employees, who were dissatisfied about the absence of their Employer, and wanted to, in the character of Distressed British subjects, make for San Francisco.
