Hammond advises the Colonial Office that the Treaty of 1846 has been considered in the negotiations with the US regarding San Juan Island and reports that Clarendon has entered into an arrangement with the US for deciding the San Juan Island dispute through arbitration. Hammond encloses the convention that includes the decision to enter arbitration with the
US over San Juan Island. Cox’s minute discusses how to respond to Cartier and McDouglas. Minutes by Cox, Rogers, and Macdonald discuss which correspondence to send to Young in Canada regarding British Columbia’s inclusion in Confederation. Robinson’s minute describes a note indicating an official request is required to receive
copies of the San Juan Convention.Included documents describe the San Juan Convention and the steps being taken to solve the San Juan Island question.

I have laid before The Earl of Clarendon your letter of the
13th instant, inclosing a copy of a letter from the
Representatives of the Canadian Government in this Country
respecting the Island of San Juan; and I have to request that
you will state to Earl Granville that the question respecting
the proper interpretation of the Treaty of 1846 between this
Country and the United States, in its application to the Islandof
of San Juan

into which he has entered with the United States' Minister in
this Country will ensure the matter being at an early period

States of America, for referring to Arbitration the Water
Boundary under Article I of the Treaty of June 15, 1846," signed
by Clarendon and Reverdy Johnson, 14 January 1869 (ten pages).

1869, requesting three copies of the Convention respecting San Juan
to send to the Governor of Canada.

Mr Woodford presents his compliments to Mr Robinson and in
the absence of Mr Currie begs to inform him, in reply to his Note
of this day asking for copies of the San Juan Convention, that
these copies must be applied for officially, and Mr Woodford
therefore regrets he cannot comply with Mr Robinson's request.
