Paldi, originally Mayo, was established by Sikh immigrants as a mill town in 1917. It was among the most culturally diverse mill towns in BC; however, the bunkhouses and cookhouses were still segregated. The majority of work in Paldi came from the surrounding lumber mills in the area, including the Mayo Lumber Company (Kapoor Lumber), which opened in 1917 and specifically recruited Japanese Canadians. Other Japanese Canadians worked for Hillcrest Lumber Company or as domestic workers in other towns and settlements nearby, including Duncan. In 1923, the Japanese Canadian community built a wooden hall that was used as a Buddhist Temple and meeting place.
