Margaret Bay, near the mouth of Smith’s Inlet, was established by non-Indigenous settlers as a settlement and a salmon cannery was built by Western Packers Ltd. in 1916. The Margaret Bay cannery processed mostly sockeye salmon and was purchased in 1923 by the Canadian Fishing Company. It ceased operating as a cannery in 1945. The Boswell Cannery, 2 kilometres from Margaret Bay, was built in 1926 and in 1928 ownership transferred to BC Packers Ltd. Boswell Cannery had a company town. Boswell’s canning operations ended in 1936 and the buildings were used as a fish camp for the Namu and Rivers Inlet canneries until the mid-1950s.
