People uprooted from Telegraph Cove (11) View on map

Telegraph Cove, located near Beaver Cove on the traditional territories of the The Kwakwaka'wakw, was established as a community in 1912 when a telegraph station was constructed on the telephone-telegraph line between Campbell River and Port Hardy. In 1922, Alfred Wastell opened a chum salmon saltery amd sawmill in partnership with Japanese associates. The operation failed, but by 1929, Alfredʼs son Fred, re-established the sawmill and called it Telegraph Cove Mills.

The mill was a major industry of the community and employed Japanese Canadians, who lived in company housing. Today, the homes of the Ogawa and Okura families, who were forcibly uprooted from Telegraph Cove, have been restored.
