People uprooted from Sunbury (32) View on map

Sunbury, a neighbourhood in North Delta on the south shore of the Fraser River, was a settlement of houses on floats and stilts. A wharf, Sunbury Landing, was built in 1902, and a school in 1904. Before the Second World War, the population of Sunbury mainly consisted of Japanese and Scandinavian fishermen, often employed by the Glenrose and St. Mungo Canneries. By 1919, half of the fishing licenses on the Fraser River were held by Japanese Canadians. During the 1920s, due to fishing license and imigration restrictions, many fishing families started farming strawberries and poultry.
