People uprooted from Pitt Lake (4) View on map

Pitt Lake is a tidal lake connected to the Pitt River and the Fraser River near Port Coquitlam. At its southern end are the community of Pitt Meadows, established in the 1870s, and a q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) reserve, established in the 1860s. The community of Alvin, established in 1901 at the lake’s northern end, served as a transport and shipping point for logging operations.

The lower Pitt watershed supported several shingle mills, while log booming and storage were major industries along the Pitt River. The Pitt Lake Shingle Company (Pitt River Shingle Company), a division of Acme Shingle Company, operated seasonally near Scotts Creek and employed many Japanese Canadians, some of whom resided in the Greater Vancouver area.
