People uprooted from Nanoose (15)
Nanoose (Nanoose Bay), historically Berry Point,
is located on the traditional territories of the Snaw-naw-as First Nation. The Nanoose
Bay reserve was established in 1876, and non-Indigenous settlers set up several small
agricultural settlements in the 1880s. By 1906 there was a post office and hotel in
the Nanoose Bay community (formerly Arlington). In 1910, the Esquimalt and Nanaimo
Railway (E&N) train station opened. The Straits Lumber Company mill opened in Red
Gap, on the western shore of the harbour, in 1912. The sawmill was open until 1942.
Many Japanese Canadians who listed their address as Nanoose would have been living
and working in Red Gap. The Giant Powder Company plant and townsite, named Powder Point,
operated on the shore of Nanoose Bay from 1912 to 1925, although it is unclear if
Japanese Canadians were employed there.
