People uprooted from Lake Cowichan (3)
Lake Cowichan, originally Kaatza, was established by non-Indigenous settlers around 1886. The first logging operations began in 1890. The Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway (E&N) was built in 1912, and a branch line to Lake Cowichan completed in 1913, allowing logging activity to boom during the 1920s. Logging camps and mills were established at Youbou, Caycuse, Honeymoon Bay, and Mesachie Lake. Japanese Canadian Eikichi Kagetsu had shares in the Ocean Timber Company and logged in the Skutz Falls area near the lake. By late 1941, the Ocean Timber Company had been sold to the Lake Logging Company.
