People uprooted from Comox (1) View on map

Comox, originally a Coast Salish fishing settlement in the Comox Valley, became a non-Indigenous settlement in 1862. Farms and residences were established on the shore, above Augusta Bay (Comox Bay), in an area known as The Landing. A government wharf and the first bridge over the Courtenay River were built in 1874. Coal mining expanded nearby with the opening of the Cumberland mines in 1888, including the mines owned by R. Dunsmuir & Sons in Cumberland. In 1910, the Comox Logging and Railway Company began operations, employing up to 450 workers.

Large Japanese Canadian communities developed in nearby Courtenay and Cumberland.
