People uprooted from Cloverdale (19) View on map

Cloverdale, part of Surrey, was established in 1870 by non-Indigenous settlers as a small farm community. The New Westminster-Southern Railway arrived in 1891 and the BC Electric Interurban line was built in 1911. With three intersecting railways running through it, Cloverdale developed into a major transportation hub.

Takiyo and Tomoyoshi Watanabe we Japanese Canadian farmers who grew strawberries along Latimer Road (192nd Street). In the early 1920s, the couple donated land for a church to be built. Many Japanese Canadians in Cloverdale and Surrey owned farms, including the Kubodera, Nishiguchi, and Osaka families.
