Slide scanning and vinyl disk digitization

: Martin Holmes
Minutes: 90

For various reasons, PS and I were working on digitizing some slides and a vinyl record, and found some gaps in our knowledge and barriers to overcome. The USB turntable was not recognized or noticed as a USB device by the Precious Linux machine, so we had to plug it into Spartan; Spartan needed Audacity to record the data, but that did work. We should try to figure out why it wouldn’t function on Linux. At the same time, we were using the large Epson 11000XL scanner to scan slides, and discovered that you need to detach the backing from the inside of the lid of the scanner (see the manual online) to get a decent back-lit image, but once we did that, the results were OK. There is a slide cradle that goes with the scanner, but it’s not in the lab; it’s probably in the storeroom.
