Pat and I are having headaches ensuring that characters are not corrupted as teachers' notes files move back and forth between us. The problem is caused by the fact that the files were generated originally in MSWord. We finally settled on globally searching and replacing all instances of smart quotes with plain quotes and the elusive character 0096 with standard hyphen.
