viHistory Maps

A variety of historical maps covering Victoria, Nanaimo, Vancouver Island and British Columbia are available here, ranging in date from 1860 to 1953. In addition to street maps and atlas maps, there are several pictorial maps, as well as detailed fire insurance maps for 1891 Victoria.

The maps are displayed using a viewer that allows you to zoom in for detail, drag the map around on the screen to see parts that are not visible, and get information about the maps and features on the maps. For instructions on using the viewer, click on Help in the blue menu above the map image in the viewer. The viewer can display a single map, or two maps at once for comparison; it can also display thumbnails of all available maps, and load the map when you click on the thumbnail image. All of the available maps can also be selected from the blue menu above the map image (click on Maps).

The map images are also available for download, full size. Only the base image will be downloaded; any overlays will not be included. To download maps with overlays, use the Snapshot tool in the viewer.

Special Maps

Some of the maps available in the map viewer can also be displayed in a specialized interface, which is easier to use or offers additional features. Some of these interfaces only work with specific browsers; these cases are noted below.
