1882 Directories

1882 Nanaimo Directory
The Nanaimo portion of Williams' British Columbia Directory lists 500 individuals and businesses. This database can be searched using family or business names, by type of business or occupation (e.g. dentist, carpenter) and by the street address of a business or resident.

1882 Victoria Directory
Williams' British Columbia Directory lists over 2,800 individuals and businesses. The database can be searched using family or business names, occupations, and addresses. This section also includes a transcipt of introductory and promotional material from the Directory, describing (in florid prose!) the city of Victoria, its industries, and its economic potential.

Researchers should note that street numbers do not appear in Victoria directories until 1889. However, the 1882 directory provides the names of streets for most businesses and many private residences. Sometimes, the names of street corners and intersections are provided.

In Nanaimo, individually numbered street addresses do not appear until 1893.

In the viHistory web site, we've referred to this publication as Williams' British Columbia Directory.
