According to this letter from Francis Gray's brother, Nutter Gray, to Pakington, Francis was a British merchant based in San Francisco. With his partners,Anthony Easterby and Matthew Rooney, he apparently discovered a vein of Goldbearing Quartz in Haida Gwaii and wished to apply for land grants.
