Deans' Canal (or Dean Channel) was named after Reverend James King, D.D., dean of
Rapole, Ireland, by Captain George Vancouver in 1793. The son of the Reverand was a crew member on board Captain James Cook's ship the Resolution during Cook's last voyage.1
