Sir,

I have to acknowledge your letter of 16th ultimo, and in reply to acquaint you that in obedience to the directions therein contained, we have obtained the concurrence of the Hudson's Bay Co to the Draft reconveyance to the Crown of Vancouvers Island, as slightly altered by the Law Officers of the Crown.

2. Enclosed are copies of the correspondence between the Company and ourselves on the subject.

3. You will observe that the alteration in Red Ink made in the Draft by the Company's Solicitor, Mr Maynard, and alluded to in his letter to Mr Fraser of 23rd ultimo, has been withdrawn by his letter to us of 10th inst, so that the Draft remains as settled by the Law Officers of the Crown, and may now be forwarded, as altered in Red ink, to the Governor of Vancouvers Island as suggested in my report of 20 March 1865.

4. I return the Draft and the Papers which accompanied your letter.

Yes. But I do not see the draft or any record of the letter of the 16th ulto. It should either be attached to 2296 VCI or referred to there.

Draft at once. The situation of the papers to be sent will require some care.

S. Walcott, Emigration Board, to Hudson's Bay Company, 19 March 1866, forwarding the draft reconveyance and advising that upon return it would be forwarded to the colony "for verification in respect to the description of the Lands which are to be excepted from the reconveyance."

Copy, Thomas Fraser to Walcott, 28 March 1866, acknowledging receipt of the draft reconveyance and forwarding a letter from their solicitor on the subject.

Copy, Joseph Maynard to Fraser, 23 March 1866, advising of only one slight alteration in the draft but generally expressing approval "subject to the descriptions being agreed in the Colony."

Copy, Walcott to Maynard, 5 April 1866, advising that the alteration made by him in the draft was covered in a different section, and asking for clarification of his position.

Maynard to Walcott, 10 April 1866, acknowledging that his amendment was indeed an oversight and that "the Draft can therefore remain as it stood without my alteration."
