Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No. 19
of the 24th of March drawing my attention to the Act of the Legislature
of Vancouver Island providing a salary for the Chief Justice.
It will of course be necessary for the Legislature to make a
permanent, as distinct from an annual, provision forthe
the successor of
the Chief Justice now to be appointed, when that Officer vacates his
appointment, but in the meantime the Act already forwarded by you
sufficiently fulfils the condition required by me, which was that Mr.
Cameron's successor should not be sent out with an uncertain provision.
