Newcastle informs Douglas that he has already been given, in an earlier despatch

act upon any proposition which might be made…by General Scott for a joint military occupation of [San Juan Island].

Sir,
I have to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No. 55 of the
9th of November last, enclosing copies of your correspondence with
Lieut. General Scott, commanding the United States Army relative to
the adjustment of the difficulties

It is only necessary for me to refer you, in answer, to the
