With reference to your letter of the 19th ultimo we have the honor
to inform you that, immediately upon its receipt, we issued to the
comptroller of the Stationery Office the necessary instructions for
printing 300 Copies of Mr Pemberton's report on the survey of the
Districts of Nanaimo and the Cowichan valley in Vancouvers Island.
2. We have received from the Stationery Office 100 Copies of thesethese
reports, of which we enclose 50 for use in the Colonial Office;
Sent to CO 31 Oct.
the remaining 50 being retained
for gratuitous distribution through this office. Arrangements have
been made by the Comptroller of the Stationery Office for the sale of
the other 200 Copies.
3. In preparing these reports for the press we thought it advisable
to omit two or three passages from the report of Mr Wells in which
he suggests the reservation of certain Land for Crown purposes.
Mr Elliot
Acke. & thank the Commrs for the trouble they have taken. Send a
few of the reports to V.C.Isd (with the view of being reprinted
there for general infn) accompanied by the Lithographed Maps when
we receive them from the War Office.
I think that it will be enough to acknowledge the receipt, & to state
that the printed copy of these Reports appears well calculated to
fulfill the object for which it was ordered. (They render us
constantly so much [more?] important services, that it would hardly
be appropriate to thank them for this.)
