Included in this document is Elliot to Hammond, 31 March 1859, stating Douglas had been instructed to procure the information requested; a draft from Lytton to Douglas, No. 40, 1 April 1859; and Pélissier, French Ambassador, to Malmesbury, Foreign Office, 23 March 1859, requesting assistance in procuring information about Jean Baptiste Massenot, who went to Victoria from California in June of 1858.
I am directed by the Earl of Malmesbury to transmit to you the
accompanying Copy of a note from the French Ambassador at this Court,
requesting that he may be furnished with information as to the fate
of a French Subject named Jean Baptiste Massenot, whowho is stated to
have arrived at Victoria, Vancouver's Island, in June last; and I am
to request that you will move Secretary Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton to
take the necessary steps to procure the information required by the
Duc de Malakoff.
