Smith writes on behalf of the HBC to acknowledge the receipt of an extract of Douglas’s despatch concerning Cameron’s salary. He replies that the HBC was not aware of this application and will address it by an early opportunity.
The minutes move to advise Douglas that the HBC will communicate with him on the subject of the salary of the Chief Justice.
Enclosed is a draft from Merivale to Smith forwarding Douglas’s despatch of 22 January 1858, and asking whether the company had made any proposals to Douglas respecting Cameron’s salary.

By direction of the Governor and Committee of the Hudsons Bay Company I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Mr Fortescue's letter of the 21st Instant, transmitting an Extract of a Despatch from the Governor of Vancouver's Island in reference to the Salary to be received by the Chief Justice, Mr Cameron, for his services in that Settlement.
The Governor and Committee instruct me to state, in reply to the observations of Mr Secretary Labouchere, that they were not aware of Governor Douglas's intention to make the application in question, having received no advice from him upon the subject, and that they will communicatewithManuscript image with him in reference thereto by an early opportunity.
