Hammond writes to Merivale to request that Russell be informed that Her Majesty’s Minister at Washington, Crampton, reports the US Congress's refusal to pay for a commission to settle the boundary between Vancouver Island and the United States.
In the minutes, Blackwood asks that the Foreign Office should request that Crampton continue to press the US government for a definition of the boundary.
The file includes a draft letter from the Colonial Office to Hammond, which asks that Crampton be instructed to press the boundary question with the US government.

With reference to your letter of the 2nd Instant I am directed by the Earl of Clarendon to request that you will acquaint Lord John Russell that Her Majesty's Minister at Washington reports that the Bill for providing for the expences of a Commission to settle theBoundaryManuscript image Boundary between Van Couver's Island and the territory of the United States was negatived by the United States Congress.
