With reference to Mr Elliot's Letter of the 12th Instant I am
commanded by the Lords Commissoners of Her Majesty's Treasury to
request that you will state to Secretary Sir John Pakington that the
Instructions proposed to be given to the Governor of Van Couver's Island
with respect to the rights of the Crown in Queen Charlotte's Island,
being in conformity with those already issued for the Australian
Colonies, My Lords do not object to their being transmitted to him, as
proposed by Sir John Pakington; but They think it may be desirable to
point out to the Governor of Van Couver's island the necessity ofof
keeping the Sums received on account of Licenses to search for Gold in
Queen Charlotte's Island, separate and distinct from any other Revenue
that may be received in the Colony.
Mr Elliot
I have introduced into the despatch the Suggestion of the Treasury (see
Par. 4) and the Admiralty having, as I have ascertained by
communication with that Board, no observation to make on the proposed
instructions I presume the despatch may be forwarded. I annex a fair
copy for signature with the Treasury addition, Sir John Pakington having
approved the draft.
