Griffiths writes to Hawes with the aim to solicit Grey for the position of commander of
Enrolled Pensioners,under the Governor of Vancouver Island.
In the minutes, Blackwood points out that the position for which Griffiths solicits is handled by Douglas. Grey adds that nothing
has been settled,and that such a position is dependent on the HBC covering the associated costs.
This file encloses a draft letter from the Colonial Office to Griffiths, advising that they are unable to employ him as commander of enrolled pensioners
of Vancouver Island at present.
With reference to the Command with which I was lately
entrusted
in the Hudson's Bay Territory, and to the intention announced in
some of the Publick Prints, of Her Majesty's Government 
to apportion one or more Companies of
Enrolled Pensioners for Service in Vancouver's Island, as at the
Red River Settlement in Rupert's Land, I venture to solicit your
good offices to bring my name under the notice of Earl Grey, in
the event of the Governor of Vancouver's Island being appointed
under similar Circumstances, to those attending the appointment
of Major Caldwell, to that of Assiniboia, Red River 〜
