Governor Blanshard is desirous of going by the Mail to
Chagres, and thence across the Isthmus to
Panama, being anxious to see,
and make himself master of, the route which may ultimately be that by
which Settlers may go from this country; — and not only for this

                purpose,
which I think a very useful one, but also that he may arrive at

Vancouvers Island at an earlier period than he could do by going in a
Ship from here round the Horn; — provided he be forwarded from
Panama by
one of Her Majesty's vessels on the Pacific Station, some of which, I
understand, are constantly at that place to receive the letters from
England, and the Squadron has frequent communication with
Vancouver
                  Island. I have therefore
to
to request that Your Lordship will move the

Board of Admiralty to give directions for
Governor Blanshard's being
received on board one of Her Majesty's Ships at
Panama, and conveyed to
               his destination.
