Hammond to Under-Secretary of State
I am directed by the Earl of Clarendon to acknowledge the
receipt of your Letter of the 2nd instant forwarding a copy of
a Resolution passed by the Legislative Council of British
Columbia relative to the Island of San Juan; and in reply I am
to request that you will state to Earl Granville that Lord
Clarendon fears that it will be of no use at present to moot
this question with the United States Government.
I am to add that copies of this correspondence will be sent,
Confidentially, to Mr Thornton by this day's Mail.
