Hammond to Under-Secretary of State
I am directed by the Earl of Clarendon to submit to you for the
information of Earl Granville, copies of a Correspondence as
marked in the margin,
upon the subject of the alleged
encroachment of the Agents of the Hudson's Bay Company, on the
territory and trade of Alaska.

This seems enough. The American Government complained of
encroachment on Alaska, by the Hudson's Bay Company—& the
result is that the Company have ordered the withdrawal
of their
establishment on the River Youcon—the special case complained of.

a response be prepared for communication to Reverdy Johnson.

Edward Thornton to Clarendon, 13 February 1869, enclosing
copy of a message from the President of the United States to
the Senate regarding the alleged encroachments.
Printed message of the President of the United States in relation
to the encroachments of the agents of the Hudson's Bay Company upon the
trade and territory of Alaska, read 5 February 1869 (four pages).
Clarendon to Johnson, 2 March 1869, explaining the position of
the Hudson's Bay Company and advising that should it be proved
that Fort Yukon is within the Alaskan border, the Company would
withdraw at once.
Northcote to Hammond, 5 May 1869, advising that the
Directors of the Company had issued instructions for the
withdrawal of the Company's establishment on the Yukon River.
