Romaine discusses the contents of a recent letter from Hastings, where Hastings’s reports a murder occurring on Salt Spring Island and a somewhat unsatisfactory state of affairs existing amongst the settlers and the Indians. Minutes by Cox, Sandford, and Rogers discuss waiting for Seymour’s report of the situation reported in Hastings’s letter. Cox’s minute suggests seeing 3838 Adm.

I am commanded by My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to acquaint you for the information of Earl Granville that a Letter has been received from Rear Admiral The Hon. G. Hastings dated 1st Janry/69 No. 1 in which he stated that he had despatched the "Sparrowhawk" to Salt Spring (Admiralty) Island, between Esquimalt and Nanaimo, to support the local authorities in the maintenance of order; a murder havingbeen
