Merivale (Permanent Under-Secretary) to Elliot (Assistant Under-Secretary)
India Office, S.W.
19th September 1868
Sir,
In accordance with the request contained in your letter dated 14
Inst: I am directed by Sir Stafford Northcote to forward to you
for the information of the Duke of Buckingham & Chandos, a copy
of Act I of 1859 passed by the Legislative Council of India,
being an "Act for the amendment of the Laws relating to
Merchant Seamen."
Mr Holland
Send this out to Govr Seymour & express his Grace's regret
that he has been unable to comply with the Atty Genls
request for a copy of the Indian Statutes.
Mr Adderley
I think the request for the Indian Acts was really unreasonable
in the case of a Colony like B. Columbia & I would therefore
leave out all expression of regret.
Draft reply, Buckingham to Seymour, No. 78, 24 September 1868 sending Seymour “the East Indian Local Statute…No. 1 of 1859” and informing Seymour that all of the statues cannot be sent to British Columbia.
