No. 5
New Westminster
4th February 1868
My Lord Duke,
I have had the honor to receive the Earl of Carnarvon's despatch No. 12, of the 7th February 1867, and No. 51 of 31 August 1867, directing me to pay the sum of one hundred andfortyManuscript image forty one pounds, one shilling, and three pence (£141.1.3), due to the War Department for Stores supplied to the Artillery Volunteers in this Colony.
2. We have been making very large remittances to the Colonial Agents lately and of Course an order from Your Grace's department would at once procure the payment of the amount applied for. But if we could obtain a somewhat extended credit itwouldManuscript image would be a benefit to us (small as the amount is) in the present state of the finances.
I have the honor to be,
My Lord Duke,
Your most obedient,
humble Servant.

See 2705 from War Office who have consented to the postponement of payments of this sum of £141.1.3 until more prosperous times. If the Agents are tolerably well supplied with Funds I incline to think it wd be better to pay off such a small Item as this.
