I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 5,
               of the
31st of January last stating the reasons which had induced you to
               postpone the appointment of
Mr. W.G. Cox to be Police Magistrate and
               Assistant Gold Commissioner at the
KootenayMines
Mines, and to leave him for
the present in charge of the
Cariboo District.

On this subject I have only to observe to you that I must
necessarily depend mainly on your judgment in the choice and
distribution of the Gentlemen whom you select on the spot to be Officers
of your government and that I do not doubt that you
had
 had sufficient
reasons for the course which you adopted on the present occasion.
